Gnu....thanks for that but it doesn't really help me.

Peter, Stim & GUEST appear to have cracked it. They are the chords for the verse ending bars.

However I have been doing a bit of research myself and have found this link that confirms this.

It also shows that John was using some form of D tuning not standard tuning. ??   

I always though that this was one of John's own compositions but note
from Guest's excellent link that it was written by Steve Gillette and Tom Campbell.

Shows that even after all these years I am still learning.
