Just to update. I went to David Crystal's lecture last night, and it lived up to my expectations, though he apologized for having to also talk about the History of English in 100 words and the Chester Miracle Plays. Crystal is always an entertaining lecturer and makes no apologies for not adding anything to what's already in the book. If he's talking in next year's Chester Literature Festival, I'll be back.
