I make my meager living by coercing people into buying my pottery at art fairs and festivals. I use old socks as reusable packing material for mugs and the like. Pottery needs to be wrapped in something so it won't be broken during transport to and from shows. A whole sock covers a tall narrow piece like a goblet, and a sock cut into two pieces covers two coffee mugs. Popping a sock over a pot is quicker than wrapping it in newspaper or bubble wrap, and socks can be used over and over.
