I'll be cynical and say that New Jersey is so solidly "blue" that Christie knows he has nothing to lose by telling the truth and acting like a man, not a politician.

But as Bill says, it's not what he might be calculating but what he's doing that counts.

Less cynically, an unscrupulous politician would have watched his words carefully, so as to maintain his standing within his own party. You know, for 2016.
