We had troublesome crows here this year, during spring and early summer before they moved on. The pattern of bird occupancy has changed as builders continue to take away the open prairie in the area adjoining my neighborhood. And the weather is changing, impacting plants, insects, and birds. I purchased bird seed a couple of weeks ago, thinking it might be time to put out the bird feeders, but I'll start with one in the front yard. The birds bother my garden if they're invited to the area by the feeders and I have a bunch more eggplants and peppers I want to harvest.

That is a clever squirrel feeder. I don't intentionally feed the squirrels, but they do figure out how to raid the bird feeders.

Just now I heard a startling noise - like maybe something big moving in the attic - and had visions of having to find and seal a hole into the attic after I drive out a racoon or possum - but it was a delivery man on the porch, moving the heavy bench in order to leave a large box out of sight. When the doorbell rang I relaxed from the attic visions. I ordered some items with points from a credit card - a bunch were about to expire and I didn't have a plan to use them as air travel points so I shopped carefully and have brought some useful devices into the household. The one I have been thinking about for a long time is the heat seal vacuum food saver device. I spoke to a friend who told me that Sam's Club sells a roll of the bag material that works well with them, keeping the cost reasonable. My freezer is full of bags with air in them and I'm going to shift to putting things in the freezer in the vacuum sealed bags to save space and help it last longer.

After the freeze scare last week it looks like we have a couple of warm weeks forecast. I'm going to try to make the most of the garden this year. I'm also thinking that a generator might be a good investment one of these days.
