Canned pie filling is a very different creature than canned applesauce--the addition of flour and/or corn starch to thicken it changes the preserving game: You need to pressure-can for it to keep safely!

Pure apples cooked into sauce have enough acidity and sugar content that processing in a boiling water bath for the recommended time--varied according to altitude and jar size--is sufficient for safe keeping.
