Deleting Java seems a bit of a sledgehammer to kill a fly.

Simply running a number of add-ons that block scripts, adds and tracking devices (in Firefox I run: Adblock plus, Noscript, Better Privacy and Ghostery) I NEVER see any adds or pop-ups anywhere.
Javascripts are blocked unless I allow them to run. My Google setting are set not to record any history and I also regularly clean out the unwanted cookies that slip through the Malware detection.

It's not rocket surgery.
