Thread Name: Lyr Req: Hairy Eggs and Bacon
Subject: Lyr Add: HAIRY EGGS 'N' BACON
Here's my attempt at a transcription from recording(s?) found on Spotify. Notice there are a few gaps and uncertainties:
HAIRY EGGS 'N' BACON
As sung by Murphy and His Gang on "Up for the Craic" and Alan Rose on "Past & Present" (They sound like the identical recording to me.)
1. I worked down on a Kerry farm in a place they call the Strand,*
For I was hired for nine long months by a miser of a man.
The morning I was hired by him, we strolled down by the sea.
He promised me a patch of land and then shook hands with me,
Saying, "Welcome to you, Johnny, for you are a dacent man,"
But little I knew what I had to do at Brady's of the Strand.*
CHORUS: With your hairy eggs and bacon, hairy eggs and ham,
But little I knew what I had to do at Brady's of the Strand.*
2. Oh, the wife she was a bit of a hag with a tombstone for a gob,
And whenever I told a bit of a joke, she laughed … it from the hog(?).
The poor old creature lost her mind, no hair upon her head,
But Brady's head was shinin' from the rashers and fried bread.
Old Brady he got jealous when his poor old wife would smile,
So … made up and … and pushed the dog(?) outside.
3. The bed was walkin' with lice and fleas; the mice ran up and down.
They were there now in their millions; sure it was a little town,
With scratchin' and with tearin' till my poor old head was sore
Until one night the mat got up and walked right out the door.
4. When nine long months I waited for Brady and his one
To take me to the funny farm 'cause my mind had nearly gone.
And now to finish and conclude, take this advice from me:
Stay away from … [place name?] farmers with their hairy eggs and tea.
[* I don't think "the Strand" is correct; it is probably some other place name that I don't recognize.]
