there three songs i know of about the sprghill mine disasters. two in french. one locally writen in english. all are in helen creightons books i thuink. i'd have to go look up the frecnh ones==so don't hold your breath.. there were several minning disasters at sprinhill going well into the nineteenth century. that coal had blood all over it.
i was a kid during the most recent and most famous "bump"(locals call the clooapses bumps). i remember people glued to radios and the local doctors were all away up in springhill. we didn't have tv that i remember yet, or at least few did. it was gripping local drama and even as a eight year old i knew it.
i lived in a rooming house in halifax while at university years later. one guy down the hall was a survivor of the last bump. nice guy. a bit odd. he occasionally said he found the pitch dark comforting, and used to sit in his room in the dark, with all the curtains drawn. other than that he had no injuries. i do ocasionally wonder what he thought about sitting in the dark?
