Some players cut their nails at a slant, with the corner towards the thumb down low and the corner closer to the pinkie up high. Then they can use either the soft part of their fingertip or the part with the nail behind it to hit the string.

I've tried it, and it works, but I'm not dedicated enough to get really good at it. It's called the 'flesh and nail' method.

When I saw Martin Wyndham Read using a thumbpick, I knew in my heart that was the method for me.
