His experience of WW2 was that his fiancee and the love of his life was killed by a German bomb. He never remarried or felt the slightest inclination to form a strong relationship with another woman, so in that respect, I can at least understand and allow for his visceral anti-German feeling.

But his wider (and well-documented) racism was more difficult to stomach.
