Charmion, KGL is indeed on the sweet side, but more me, it's gingery all right. Have you tried sipping it ice cold? Please don't dilute it with ordinary rum. My concoction requires Wray & Nephew Overproof, there's no substitute that I know of. The almost subliminal amount of Cointreau removes a slightly rough edge.
