I agree that the harmonies used by Bing et al. are pretty straightforward (not complicated chords), but I find them more interesting than many harmonies because they don't stay above or below the melody, but 'cross over' in several places.   

And, Joe, yes, Bing's whistling - like Al Jolson's - was pretty impressive.
