In America, we're told that Democrats are liberal and Republicans are conservative.

Liberal = progressive. Progressive = cares about the poor and will spend tax money on them.

Conservative = reactionary (wants things to stay the same or revert to an earlier time). Conservative = doesn't want to pay taxes because the money will be spent on others.

Something like that. Liberals caring, Conservatives uncaring.

But this isn't borne out historically. After all, we used to have welfare in the U.S. It was called Aid to Families with Dependent Children. But Bill Clinton killed the program. We no longer have welfare in the U.S. because of Clinton. And people still hail him as a "liberal," "progressive" and so forth.

Conservatives don't like to be taxed, so they favor smaller government (less need to collect taxes to spend on government if it's smaller). But George W. Bush at least doubled the size of the federal government, and he was a "conservative."

So we've been misdirected forever on this issue.

But now the two sides of our political spectrum have found an issue they can agree on--putting kids under armed guard. Have any of you looked at emergency contingency plans for public schools? FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security TELL US that they will put our kids on busses and take them to "places of safety" in an emergency. And now, while they draft legislation to disarm us, they draft legislation to put armed guards in schools. There's a chance now that in some bullshit emergency you could rescue your kid from being carted off to oblivion, but once you're disarmed and Barbara Boxer has put armed guards in the schools, you'll be lucky if you get to wave goodbye to your kid as they kick his or her ass onto the bus.
