I thought it was a charming little telly programme. Someone nailed it below when commenting that TV programmes need to appeal to ALL viewers, from gran down to the kids, and not just specialists in specific fields. Scholarly writings and archive recordings are there for the latter. Telly is a medium for entertainment first and foremost and education second at best. I do appreciate some of the grumpings about the inevitable use of 'famous faces' being used to front a TV programme, but that's just how telly works.
