Well Eliza.... it is just as Amos said. To clarify, it is just simpler for [most] men to NOT bother with unbuckling belt & lowering trousers. It has been called "the male prerogative" ... the ability to go almost anywhere, like behind a tree or barn, with minimal preparation. (very useful in combat, when hunting,etc....) It also, as noted, means a shorter line and fewer facilities at festivals, ballparks...etc.
Yes...standing **can** be messier when using a regular toilet (splash), but urinals ease this in public restrooms. (There IS the element of just caring & trying to be careful...often lacking in some when in a hurry or when not quite sober!!)
To add one more parameter... since men are constructed differently, very large men (read:obese) do not FIT properly on a standard toilet for sitting urination. (I know... they MUST sit sometimes... but standing and 'aiming' can be the lesser of two problems. I have seen stalls where I KNOW who was in ahead of me, and it was not pleasant)
(It all gets kinda awkward to discuss, hmmm? And I KNOW that some will have different views or analysis of the situation than I have offered.... but I have tried for many years to be open-minded and honest about the realities.)(At home, I have a very good brand of paper towels available, in addition to regular toilet paper, and I try to wipe any splashes away. I also try to remember to TAKE a few sheets with me when I will be away from home for a few hours or a few days... as at a festival..etc.)
I decided many years ago that since it was an issue I had to deal with several times every day, I might as well learn to cope and plan ahead... for my own benefit and others....
