Just as an extra comment, in my husband's family's district in Ivory Coast (Adjame,a shanty-suburb of Abidjan) there was a running battle last night of two rival gangs. Young lads from both groups were fighting like mad in the street. Some of them were actually armed with pistols of some sort which they'd obtained during the civil war. The Police were called. Now the Police there are terribly violent, vicious, corrupt and many on drugs too. A gun battle ensued, with the Police firing on the youngsters indiscriminately. My husband's young cousin was shot in the head and died instantly. There wasn't much left of his head in fact. The Authorities took the body away to the local mortuary, and the family are being asked for 150,000 fr CFA (about £200, an astronomical sum) for it to be released for burial. If they don't produce the money (and it's impossible that they could) he'll be chucked in a burial pit with dead prisoners and criminals. So some lads were fighting. If there had been no guns on either side, no-one would have died. The boy was only seventeen.
