Sure, almost everybody's a believable, somewhat reasonable, and fairly likable human being once you get rid of the rhetoric. The reason for the "hate and despise routine" is that the rhetoric some politicians use to inspire loyalty in their supporters also inspires hate and despisal in their opponents. They crave being despised by their opposition because it creates more intense loyalty among their supporters. Instead of seeking common ground with opponents, they deny that their opponents' concerns are valid.

How is an environmentalist supposed to feel when he sees someone running for high office leading a "Drill baby, drill!" cheer? It's provocation, plain and simple, and what it seeks to provoke is despisal.
