There was a detailed story about this on NPR in the last couple of days. Very interesting. It isn't just finding old recordings that exist, it is also the retention of newer recordings - finding the software versions that recordings were processed with in recent decades. New versions of software not supporting old can render a recording useless. Making some kind of metadata standard so the program and version information is in the recording.
