As with writing a song, if you have a good idea, you have a responsibility to make a good job of it or you've spoiled it for someone more able.

I can't see that. Any number of great songs and plays and stories where the ideas have been used less successfully. In fact probably virtually all of them. There's no copyright in an idea, fortunately.
