Subject: RE: The World's Room Trad Singing Club 2013
After a wonderful first birthday celebration last month, we're starting our second year of song on 19th April with a focus on the Borders traditions of Scotland and England, featuring Mike Tickell from Northumberland and Kathy Hobkirk from Hawick.
Mike Tickell is an unaccompanied singer performing the traditional songs of rural Northumberland. These range from lively chorus to stark ballad. He learnt many from his father and later from the few remaining singers of his area in the North Tyne Valley. His CD "Warksburn" 1995 includes many of the less well known songs and he also features on the Northumbrian compilation album: "From Sewingshields to Glendale". Now in his seventies he normally fishes, gardens and walks his lurcher dogs, but in 2012 he toured extensively with his daughter Kathryn's " Northumbrian Voices" and was a guest at Cullerlie. He has also won the singing and Border Ballad competitions at a number of Border Festivals.
Kathy Hobkirk was born and brought up in Ayr and has been living in the Border town of Hawick for a number of years. She likes singing old driech songs full of blood, guts, gore and houghmagandy - sometimes all at once! Her repertoire covers everything from muckle sangs, to Burns, to daft wee ditties, all delivered in her own unique style.
If you like Border ballads - this one's for you!!! Hope to see you there.
