"I wasn't paying THAT much attention, but I thought it was pretty certain the John Hurt character is the same physical person as the Doctor (leaving regeneration issues aside) but that he is not the doctor in any other sense (for example, he is from a life before the persom re-evaluated their life, thought better of it and so became the doctor)."
