A Fender salesman told me (around 1975) that they had ceased manufacturing in the US because the place in California was very cold at night - the temperature changes from day to night were causing movements and splits in the wood which made quality control very difficult.I remember seeing some pictures in 60s catalogues which seemed to show that they were making them on the beach!
