Subject: RE: Summer Declutter & Fitness - JULY '13
Today I met with the new group I'll be working with - I don't know much of what I'll be doing there (it is a new job), and then I trained one of the three who will be taking over my old job. He is frankly frazzled at learning to use InDesign - if you hire someone to do a job they should have some of the skills - he thought he'd be doing a different job altogether. I know and like him well enough to know he will learn it, we'll do it side-by-side. He has an MFA and I think this stuff will kick in for him.

As we spoke about all of this today, he told me "they said you said you didn't want to do this job any more." No, that isn't what I said. I said I wanted the Director job because that was what I was already doing, and if I didn't get that I didn't want to be shoved into the background doing part of my old job. That, to me, is a demotion. I would switch in that case. He concluded that the easy answer would be to change the name of the job he is now doing (communications assistant) to the name of the job I want to do (Publications coordinator), and then give him the job he was promised a year ago (a mid-level job in customer service) that included supervision and a raise. Then we'd both be happy.

I suppose in a sense it is easier knowing that other people are unhappy with this reorganization. (Misery loves company?) If we'd been asked our opinions, it would have been a lot different. They were so busy rearranging us to serve the customers that they forgot to ask us what we want.

I'm upgrading a new laptop this evening - from Windows 8 home to pro. I had to go back to get an external DVD player - I forgot I needed it when I picked up the low-cost update at school (one of the few perks of working in high education - relatively cheap software. They know that we're smart enough to hijack it otherwise. . . )
