If you stay in Sin John's, ya should consider a pizza from Pizza Experts. The works with tomatoe. Best pie I've ever had and I've had em from Boston ta TO ta... Sin John's. Now, if ya want good fish n chips, Ches', but ya might not be nearby and I dunno if Ches delivers. They do not sell Cotton Candy at the Cotton Club but she will dance at your table for $5.
Gros Mourne is beyond delightful. I have explored it extensively yet minutely over 6 or more visits. The Western Brook Pond Tour Fjord tour is lovely and I enjoyed the walk in and out as well. That was a highlight for me and I am sure you will marvel at the geology of The Tabletops. My fondest memory is, while staying in a cabin in Rocky Harbour, a lad of of about 8, accopanied by his younger bother knocked on the door. Two shocks of red hair and big blue eyes. "Ye wants tongues n cheeks? Fahdder jus come in wit n." "How much?" "Five dollars a pound, sir." "How many pounds ya got?" "Seven pounds sir." "I'll take em all." They stared at each other in disbelief! The older lad said, "First door!" and they raced away, returning out of breath with 7 plastic bags. I gave them $35 dollars and then said, as I handed them each $5, "This is for you, as long as you promise not to tell yer old man. Again, disbelief. "Thank you, SIR!" Breakfast was extra special that day and every day thereafter until all was consumed.
Port au Choix, Red Bay and L'Anse aux Meadows. What can I say. It brings archeology up close and personal. In L'Anse aux Meadows, I was fascinated by the ongoing dig even moreso than the main site, which is a slice of pretty ancient history.
Then, get raedy for icebergs. Up close and personal. Awesome.
Torngats. Awesome. I worked in Makkovik and Nain. Makkovik is where I had a very up close and personal experience with dynamite. My boss thought I had gone for a walk but it started to rain, with hail, so I went back to the trailer for a nap. The 90 second warning. Nope. Didn't hear it. "Fire in the hole!"? Nope. The shot? Yes. It was six feet from my bed. Cracked the toilet in the bathroom next to my room, which was a damn shame because they couldn't hook up the water and sewer so we still had to use the crapper with the plastic bag. Ya know how ya can get sick of leftovers? After seal for every meal for three days, I asked if there was anyting else. Caribou stew! Yes please. No meat, just tallow. I cannot eat seal, except for Flipper Pie, to this day.
Nain, the most northern year round settlement after Joey Smallwood moved a bunch of Innu from further north to better supply them with "services". That was the first airstrip I ever surveyed and then designed with scale, pencil, paper and calculator. Brought it on budget, too. On Google Earth, take a look at Pikaluyak just to the west of the airstrip. I made friends with some locals and had a number of boat/fishing tours. Upon seeing Pikaluyak, I said "Lord fuck, buddy! Ya got some BIG beavers round here." That went around town like wildfire and the subsequent nickname was apt for an engineer.
Gee whiz... I could tell tales about Nain alone long enough ta bore the life outta ya. Like the time we nearly died four times in one fishin trip on accounta dumbass NEVER cleaned out his gas tank. And, the time I got caught out on a boulder field and the eight foot dorsal fin had me a tad worried. I swam the last 15 feet or so and the water was so cold, I pissed myself. It WAS the cold water. I was NOT scared... although I had a heightened sense of awareness. I did sling the Artic Char and cod over my shoulder and came ashore with them. When I presented Cooky with my catch, I learned the difference between Cod and Rock Cod. Cod are eaten. Rock Cod will get you repeatedly struck with a broom whist the beater beats the beatee while yelling, "Git dem fuckin tings outn me kitchen ya FUCKIN MAINLANDER BASTARD!" Everyone enjoyed the Char... except me. I knew better. The dogs devoured the Rock Cod.
Okay... I'll shut up now. Bon voyagies, Rap. You are gonna have a great cruise.
