Thread Name: folk clubs in the Channel Islands
Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands
Yes, I was at that Alderney club with Ken Lees and Taffy Thomas about 1978 at a guess...the gales had covered the folk club room floor with sand!!- lovely village on an island with a sad wartime history- I recall Taffy describing Alderney after a few Bucktrouts and Hankey Bannisters-'300 alcoholics clinging to a rock'...
Played at the Mermaid in Sark several times in the 70s/80s with Ken, Tufty Swift among others but wouldn't dream of going to the folk festival. Island friends tell me that the reign of terror by the Barclay Brothers (not a blues group but a couple of Glasgow thugs who own the Telegraph- DON'T BUY IT!!)) who are trying to take over the lovely island of Sark and create a non-EU empire where they can do as they like, and don't care how they do it. Check it out but have nothing to do with the festival, which is financed by the aforementioned gangsters- read the stories and tell me I'm exaggerating- I'm not!
