I've always thought of Mariah (rye) as a very 19th century and earlier pronunciation - with no particular evidence to support my theory.

My better half, on the other hand, when introduced to strangers, gives a sigh of resignation when they open out their arms and burst out singing, "Mar-ee-ah - I've just met a girl called Mar-ee-ah!"

She gets even more shirty when they fail to pronounce it properly and say "Marie"...
