Thread Name: Spanish Civil War songs/People's Songs
Subject: Spanish Civil War songs in People's Songs (USA)
Does anyone have access to the publications of The People's Songs from the 1940's until 1950? If so would you please look in them and see whether there were songs from the Spanish Civil War reprinted there, and give a reference for where they appear?
I have been reading Robbie Lieberman's greatly illuminating book My Song Is My Weapon, People's Songs, American Communism, and the Politics of Culture, 1930-50. She often mentions the singing of Spanish Civil War songs in connection with People's Songs and those connected with it. I am trying to track down how Spanish Civil War songs entered the repertoire of folk singers in the English speaking world and this seems a promising lead. One song which Lieberman specifically mentions is Viva La Quince Brigada and if you come across this song will you see whether the song has a chorus which includes the words Ay Manuela! rather than the alternative Ay Carmela! and whether anyone is given credit for having written the song's lyrics.
I live in England where access to these publications is not easy and so I will be very grateful if someone is able to help me with this.
