There can be great pleasure to be got from stumbling across books that had formative influences on your life.
I would give my right arm for a copy of 'One Thousand and one Poems', an early birthday present which I loaned to a teacher who never returned it - the *******.
Can I suggest to anybody interested in Childrens' books that there are a number of works, some available, others out of print but obtainable, which deal with the subject as a whole and are helpful in tracking down half-remembered collections.
William and Ceil Baring Gould's 'The Annotated Mother Goose'. Leonard de Vries, 'Flowers of Delight' and Demer and Moyles' 'From Instruction to Delight' - an anthology of childrens' literature to 1850, are all useful to consult and a pleasure to read and re-visit in their own right.
