Subject: RE: Glasgow TMSA annual soup-song
Perhaps someone else can recall this better than I can, but at the back of my mind there's a memory of an Irish song about soup.

It celebrates the time of the potato famine when, it is said certain Protestants opened soup kitchens for the starving poor. The catch was, or so it was claimed, because I can't find any truth in it, that you had to convert to Protestantism before they'd give you any. Hence the saying "Taking the soup", referring to anyone who'd forsaken the Catholic religion.

Anyway, some bright spark wrote a song about this in which one guy took a single spoonful of the stuff and, hey presto, it instantly turned him into a Protestant.

If I think hard enough and long enough, I might be able to remember where I heard it.
