The original parody, with no bawdy words, was called "The Conscientious Objector's Lament." It was written by Canadian Lieutenant Gitz Rice.

Rice's publisher brought a copyright suit against a London music hall performer in 1917 for performing parts of the "Lament" as the chorus to a song of his own.
