Yes, sounds as if your system is just slow. I did the same as you (though that's not usually how I access it) and it worked fine.

When you get to this stage:
"I just get a momentary spinning-wheel-of-something-loading-up "

that seems to be when your system is slow. It worked for me in a few seconds.
