Thread Name: Glasgow Ballad Workshop - Jan/Feb 2014
Subject: Glasgow Ballad Workshop - Jan/Feb 2014
During the increasingly eclectic programme of events for Celtic Connections 2014, Glasgow Ballad Workshop is proud to present a series of three (independent) events which showcase traditional song at its best.

SUN 19th JANUARY -- a grand get-together of TOM SPIERS and ARTHUR WATSON from northeast Scotland, with a rare and special repertoire of songs and ballads from the area with arguably the most spectacular range of traditional songs. Both count themselves lucky to have been members of Aberdeen Folk Club when regular visitors included Jeannie Robertson, Jimmy McBeath and Lizzie Higgins. And their association with the late Peter Hall in the group The Gaugers gave them access to Peter's fine archive of field recordings.

SUN 26th JANUARY -- as close as we could manage to Burns' Night, we are delighted to welcome SHEENA WELLINGTON -- known to most Scots for her rendition of Burns' 'A Man's a Man' at the opening of the Scottish Parliament. But Sheena has been respected on the folk scene for many years prior to that, for her true, clear voice; her wide-ranging repertoire; and her ability to pen a fine song herself!
And don't be surprised if there are a few kent faces to contribute some of Burns' poetry as well as his fine songs, both written and collected.

SUN 2nd FEBRUARY -- This is an event in the making: the equivalent last year was when the Young Yins of the Workshop took up the challenge and delivered a very popular and well-received afternoon of ballads.
This year the gauntlet has been thrown down to the Auld Yins to share the responsibility, so watch this space for further information!

All events take place in Avant Garde bar in King Street (very near the Tron Theatre), where host Billy opens the doors around noon, which gives plenty time for a bowl of good home-made soup or a couple of pints before a 1pm start.

Only proviso is that space is limited and we've already got good interest from workshop members -- so please BOOK IN ADVANCE!

You can either email me -- neilsonanne@ymail.com -- or phone 01355 239592.

Would be lovely to see some 'Catters there!
