Sonnet 16/02/10                                       MLXXI

I envy one within my muse's arms,
The focus of a love I cannot know.
How can I beg to share my muse's charms,
When I've not hope that my hope might yet grow?
What can I do, to earn a glance as sweet
As that muse gives to one who has her smile?
How might I fraction of that love entreat,
That someday both could lend dreams, for a while?
Is there yet reason I should dream of eyes
That hold my heart? Dare I offer my verse
To ask for her bright smile? Yet, am I wise
To seek lost dreams, or past hopes to life nurse?
I cannot not write when my muse remains
Within my dreams: Must past leave future stains?
