Thread Name: Chords Req: You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive
Subject: Chords Add: You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive
A banjo-pickin' friend of mine tells me the chords Patty Loveless use are in some other scale (or something), not the usual guitar tuning. But these chords work for me if I want to play the song the way it's done on Patty Loveless's version (though I'm playing guitar, not banjo).

FWIW, here's the way I do it. (DK if it's in the same key or not, but it works for my voice.)

YOU'LL NEVER LEAVE HARLAN ALIVE
(Patty Loveless's version of Darrel Scott's song)

Banjo intro: [Em] [Asus2] [G] [D] [C] [G] [D] [Em]

In the de[Em]ep   da[Asus2]rk    h[G]ills of e[D]astern Kentu[[A]]cky,
that's the pl[Em]ace wh[Asus2]ere I tra[G]ce my bloodli[C]nes,
And [G/B] it was th[C]ere   [Asus2]I   re[G]ad on a hi[[A]]llside gr[C]avestone
"You'll   n[Em]eve[Asus2]r leave H[B7]arlan ali[Em]ve."

Oh, my gra[Em]ndd[Asus2]ad's da[G]d crossed the Cu[D]mberland Mo[A]untains,
Where he to[Em]ok a pr[Asus2]etty gi[G]rl to be his bri[C]de.
He said "W[G/B]on't you w[C] alk wi[Asus2]th   m[G]e out of the mo[A]uth of this h[C]oller
Or we'll ne[Em]v[Asus2]er leave H[B7]arlan ali[Em]ve."

Chorus 1:
Where the sun comes u[G]p, about te[C]n i[D]n the mo[G]rning
And the sun goes do[Em]wn about thr[F]ee in the da[C]y,
                And you fi[Am]ll your c[G]up with whatever b[C]itter brew y[D]ou're dr[G]inking
                And you[D/F#] spend your li[Em]fe just th[Asus2]inking 'bout, h[F]ow to get aw[Em]ay.

                  [Em]
No one eve[Asus2]r kn[G]ew there was co[D]al in them mo[A]untains
Till a m[Em]an fro[Asus2]m the No[G]rtheast arri[C]ved
Wa[G/B]ving h[C]undred-dollar b[G]ills, said "I'll p[A]ay you for your mi[C]nerals,"
But he ne[Em]ve[Asus2]r left H[B7]arlan ali[Em]ve.

Grandma so[Em]ld o[Asus2]ut   ch[G]eap and they mo[D]ved out west of Pi[A]neville
To a far[Em]m wh[Asus2]ere big Ri[G]chland River w[C]inds,
And[G/B] I'll bet they da[C]nced them a ji[G]g and they laughed and sa[A]ng a new s[C]ong.
"Who said we'd ne[Em]ve[Asus2]r leave H[B7]arlan ali[Em]ve?"

Instrumental break: [Em] [G] [D] [A] [Em] [G] [C] [G]/B [C] [G] [A] [C] [Em] [B7]

But the ti[Em]mes, th[Asus2]ey got ha[G]rd and tob[D]acco wasn't se[A]lling,
And old Gr[Em]anddad kn[Asus2]ew what h[G]e'd do to survi[C]ve.
He w[G/B ]ent and d[C]ug for Harlan co[G]al, sent the m[A]oney back to Gr[C]andma,
But he ne[Em]ve[Asus2]r left H[B7]arlan ali[Em]ve.

Chorus 2:
Where the sun comes u[G]p, about te[C]n i[D]n the mo[G]rning
And the sun goes do[Em]wn about thr[F]ee in the da[C]y,
And you fi[Am]ll your c[G]up with whatever b[C]itter brew y[D]ou're dr[G]inking
And you[D/F#] spend your li[Em]fe diggin' co[Asus2]al from the bo[F]ttom of your gr[Em]ave.

Repeat Verse 1
