Ah, Liz...
I've told this one before but,
I was driving the Transit Van when The Star Trek Man was created, going to a re-enactment in about 1976. Sadly I have no proof and many other people contributed ideas when we got to our destination. (Abingdon, Oxon.) It was a true Folk creation and at the time no-one thought of "ownership" as an issue.
The song was eventually taken over by another ECWS Regt. (Waltons) as their "theme tune" and it was they who instigated legal action over copyright/royalties when the song achieved its "pop" status. (Even though they hadn't actually created it). I too regard Star Trekking as a rip-off of the original.
As an aside my contribution was a verse about security men (red shirts) and their imminent demise.
