By the way, Bonnie, the "legend" about Pele and the rocks was actually made up by a park ranger in, I believe, the late 40s or early 50s. It's well documented in a book called "Letters to Pele" which is sold at the visitor's center. Most people, however, still believe it's an ancient legend. And the bit about the gin comes from the fact that juniper berries resemble the berries of the plant sacred to Pele that grows around the volcano. I think it's the ohelo berry, but don't quote me on that.
