If Mudcat made GUEST nicknames temporarily password protected (valid for, say, a month), at least this kind of abuse would be stopped completely and easily, which would be in the interest of all readers, not only of GUEST posters (who can be asked to become a member if they complain).

On the other hand, postings under several nicknames by single persons ("astroturfing") cannot be suppressed that easily, if at all. We must be careful not to be trapped.

Since self-promotion is not banned on Mudcat, it makes no sense to try to camouflage it. It is not an indication of quality if someone can mobilize two or three applauders - some of the worst amateurs have a lot more fans friends.
