Thread Name: Lyr Req: Venezuela (John Jacob Niles)
Subject: RE: I Found my Love in Venezuela
I used to sing this song - as a matter of fact it was one of the first songs that myself and my friend sang as a duo back in the mists of the early 60's. I learned it from an album of the composer that I picked up in a discard record bin at a local music shop. It was of course by John Jacob Niles. The record, which I still have, was a big influence on me and my musical development. The record is called "I Wonder As I Wander - Carols and Love Songs", and was released by Tradition Records in 1957. TLP 1023. Niles says of the song: "V. is another example of how the comp- oser's imagination can be sparked by a fragment of musical material. In this cse, the composer also had to provide his own lyrics. The place was the harbour of Boulogne, France, the time was October 1918, and the spark was the distant singing of some Barbados Negroes on a grain-ship at anchor. When Venezuela was first published, it was included in a book and, at the suggestion of the editors, was offered as something that came straight off the grain- ship. This has led to considerable confusion." Another response said that the lyrics were in the DT database, which I can't seem to access just now. Anyway, I have them on the record and if your still need them I will transcribe them and post them for you. Let me know. Denis
