I used to hate going to the dentist. When I was a kid I had my share of dentists that scared me. When I got a little older, my family switched to a new dentist, who I have been seeing for about 13 years now. He is the BEST! He has a calm, gentle demeanor, is very friendly, and actually listens to what you say. He is AbFab.The hygienist, however, is another story altogether. She too is a nice lady, very professional, but lemme tellya, I'd rather be tattooed than have my teeth cleaned any day. At least you have something really nice to show for your trouble. I don't like someone scraping my gums with a sharp metal hook.
HOWEVER.... this last time I went to have my teeth cleaned, I finally said, Jane, the sharp metal hook hurts. I can't help it, it just hurts. Period.
She said, you want some numbing gel? How about some nitrous oxide?
I was incredulous. I always had all this stuff for major dental work, but never for a cleaning. Really???!??! I said.
Yeah, she said. Just ask for The Works when you come in.
And that was that. If I had only spoken up sooner. Funny how when you actually make your concerns known, people can begin to help you.
So go ahead and go. Your teeth are very important. A really good dentist will listen to your concerns and take them seriously.
