I agree with you that there is a place for both and the festival does so too by advertising the fringe on its website and running shuttle buses into town.

Unfortunately, I can only make it for a few hours this year, so am hoping to catch up with some musicians from the old days (its five years since I moved to Knaresborough) - no disrespect to the festival at all.
