A report in this morning's Times begins "A violent thug has disappeared from an open prison in the second escape from the same jail in two days". Reading on, one finds that was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection with a minimum of term of two years [Did you hear that? Two whole years!] for almost hacking off his sister's ex-boyfriend's arm with a 3' machete. The judge said he would only be released when the parole board believed he was no longer a risk. He had previously done 18 months after spraying a nightclub bouncer with CS gas; it doesn't say how he had become engaged with a bouncer in the first place.

Is it altogether unreasonable to muse on what such a person was doing in an open prison in the first place & how far that was compatible with his presumably still being regarded as a risk?

The open prison is in Suffolk by the way. Quite near here in N Cambs. Hope he isn't heading this way!
