I can't think of a single broadside ballad that wasn't knocked into a cocked hat by a later oral version, whether from the 16thc or the 20th.

Jock learnt all of his material pretty much direct from Davy Stewart and Jimmy McBeath. He would have himself bowed to the masters.

Yes, I have Davy's wonderful rendition on Songs of Seduction, side B, track 9.
I adapted Davy's tune when I sang the original for our Yorkshire Garland website recordings at www.yorkshirefolksong.net
