Different versions of the song with different titles were very popular in the 18thc and they were widely printed on broadsides and in songsters. I can't be certain but I would imagine the original tune would also have been printed about the same time on the more upmarket sheets. I have a vague recollection that it came from one of those 18thc operettas like The Beggars' opera.
