Subject: RE: road to whitby
A thread to be resurrected in 11 months time methinks!
My preferred route from mid-Derbyshire is M1 from J29, then M18/A1 to the A168 and, after a refreshment stop in Thirsk pick up the A170 to Pickering and the A169.
This route has the advantage of avoiding the frequent log jam on the York Ring-road and often stop-start crawl towards Malton.
An alternative, should the A1 be a bit deamic, as it was on Saturday with traffic backed well up the M18 slip-road and the A1(M) it's self at less than a crawl, is to carry on to J6 of the M18 and pick up the A614 & A1041 to Selby, then the A19 to Thirsk.
If using the A19 route, at York, you have the option of going clockwise round the Ring-road, slower roads, but, if before mid-afternoon usually much less traffic, whilst anti-clockwise has slightly faster roads, but for a Saturday morning on a summer's day, is usually choked up and more than a bit stop-start.
However, as the Rosedale Abbey agricultural show is on the Saturday, it's a de-tour up the back-roads from just after Kirbymoorside via Keldholme and Huttonle-hole to call in there for a couple of hours so I can spend lots of money on pickles, sauces, jams, marmalades and PIES!!!
