Since the "Night Visiting Song" is generally recognised as "trad", discussing whether "trad" songs derive from literary or "folk" sources hardly seems to be hijacking the thread (and also seems to address the original question much more accurately than opinions of who sang it best, interesting as that may be to those of us who like to hear a song sung well).
