I have to take isse with Pete M above.. there has been a discussion on this before. and I pointed out that when Robeson first recorded this in 1929 the original words were "Niggers all work on the Mississippi" .. it was re-recorded a few years later for the film with modified lyrics
When he died there was a prog about him on Radio 4 and they played the original.. I have a tape of it somewhere.
