Subject: RE: Looking for 'Leaven' - Ron Griffin
I was a kid in Holy Trinity parish in San Pedro during the 70's when Ron Griffen did the music for the masses. He was fantastic. That was folk music for the novus ordinary at its best. I remember, even at that age, getting the hairs on my neck to stand up--he was so good. Looking back on it now, it seems clear that while the introduction of folk into the mass seemed like it would lead to more congregational participation, it did and it didn't. On one hand, when done well like Ron did, the congregation was really drawn into what was happening in the mass. On the other, the harmonies of folk were too complex for congregational singing. In the case of Ron's music, whether you tried to sing along or not didn't matter as he was such a great musician--a very spiritual musician that lead you into what the mass was about. So sorry to hear of his passing. A great loss to music and the Church.
