Up early to go to the aid of my daughter and son in law. They were off to Croydon to try to get a permission for son in law - an American, to stay in the UK permanently.

They needed some proof of income papers stamped, and their branch had refused to do it. The clerk in my branch, even as I explained the problem, offered to print out and stamp the required documentation. I went outside for a few minutes to await their arrival and give them the good news as soon as possible.

With all the paperwork in place I delivered them at the railway station and some hours later heard that all is well and the permission obtained.
