I have just had a look. I seem to use that position to play barre chords but my thumb is normally higher up the neck than that although I never cradle the neck with the web of the guitar. The width of the neck seems to make a big difference to me and I don't seem to be able to play melody comfortably on my tenor banjo with my thumb in that position.
